Borough Market veteran Turnips launches restaurant

Borough Market veteran of 30 years, greengrocers Turnips, has created a new vegetable-focused restaurant. Faced with the uncertainty of losing the family business, the restaurant is the result of an idea developed during lockdown.

“The juxtaposition between fine dining and buzzy market atmosphere is second to none and we’re so excited to be working with Tomas”

Headed by Tomas Lidakevicius, former executive chef at Jason Atherton’s City Social, guests can choose from a selection of small plates or a 5-course tasting menu showcasing seasonal vegetables.

The collaboration was spearheaded by Charlie Foster, the son of Caroline and Fred who started Turnips 30 years ago. The business has always sought to provide world class and where possible local produce, and the restaurant will look to showcase this. The menu will be driven by Turnip’s daily delivery of fruit and vegetables, adapting dishes according to what is in season.

Lidakevicius will keep plates fresh and simple, with sample dishes including sweet potato and lentil croquettes, provence tomato bruschetta and sweet ‘n’ sour brittany cauliflower with sesame seeds. Alternatively, guests can opt for a 5-course menu priced at £65pp, featuring Yorkshire beans and peas with 48hour short rib and lazare cherry with dark chocolate.

The tasting menu offer will be served from a shipping container kitchen, while casual plates and drinks are in the usual shopping area. “The juxtaposition between fine dining and buzzy market atmosphere is second to none and we’re so excited to be working with Tomas” says Foster.

The venture will run Thursdays to Sundays. To find out more or to book, visit the website here.
