Sweet roses for dessert: you can make them with just 2 ingredients, or 3 if you want them even sweeter

Sweet roses for dessert: you can make them with just 2 ingredients, or 3 if you want them even sweeter

They're not only delicious to eat but also beautiful to look at: when you make sweet roses, you show that you truly love everyone.

Every now and then, it's nice to test out our manual skills in the kitchen and become a master pastry chef. This is how sweet roses were born, a dessert that's spectacular to look at and delicious to eat.

The great thing is that we really only need 2 ingredients and the result is worth it.

Sweet roses for dessert: the two ingredients plus one we need

What do we need to make the best sweet roses? Two rolls of puff pastry, about 450 grams in total, and the same number of apples: Rennet, Fuji, Golden Stark, the ones you find at the market. We could stop there, but I also like to flavor the base with a fruit jam: peaches, apricots, figs, plums—your choice.

Ingredients: 2 packs of puff pastry 2 apples 100 g peach jam.

Step-by-step preparation of special desserts

Wash the apples thoroughly under running water and peel them. Then cut them into wedges, removing the core without damaging them with a knife. Finally, cut them into thin slices, again with a knife or mandolin. Place a small pan of water on the stove. As soon as it begins to boil, add the apple slices and let them boil. One minute is all it takes; they should still be crisp. Remove them with a slotted spoon and let them cool on a tray covered with a clean cloth.

Take a 12-cup muffin pan, similar to the roses that will form with this amount of ingredients. Using softened butter, taken out of the refrigerator well in advance, and a small brush, grease each muffin pan.

Then, remove the puff pastry from the refrigerator and roll it out with a rolling pin, leaving the parchment paper underneath, to form two equal rectangles. Using a pastry wheel, cut six 5-6 cm wide strips from each pastry sheet and fill them with peach jam. Dry the apple slices thoroughly and place 4-5 on each strip of pastry, slightly overlapping each other. The outer edge should extend beyond one edge of the pastry strip.

Fold the puff pastry strip over the apples and roll it up. Simply start from one of the two narrower sides, secure it tightly once rolled, and voilà: your apple rose is magically ready. Place each rose in a mold and sprinkle with a pinch of brown sugar before baking. It's not mandatory, but it works great. Bake the apple roses in a preheated oven at 180°C (350°F) for 40 minutes, and remove them when they're ready. Wait until they're cool before removing them from the molds, otherwise they'll break.
