Certified Pommelier exam comes to Australia for the first time

Australia will host its first-ever Certified Pommelier examination in October, giving Australian candidates access to the world’s leading professional cider certification program.

Widely regarded as the gold standard in cider education, the Certified Pommelier designation is the advanced level of the American Cider Association’s globally recognised Certified Cider Professional (CPP) program, providing in-depth knowledge of cider production, sensory evaluation, styles, service, food pairing and global cider traditions.

Designed for experienced cider professionals and enthusiasts seeking advanced certification, the Certified Pommelier examination assesses candidates on cider theory, production knowledge, global styles, sensory analysis and blind tasting evolution.

Jennie Dorsey, Director of Education and Program Development for the American Cider Association, says: “Australia has a vibrant and innovative cider community, and we’re excited to bring the Certified Pommelier pathway directly to Australian professionals. As cider continues to earn recognition alongside wine, beer, and spirits, there is growing demand for advanced education that helps professionals confidently evaluate, sell, serve, and advocate for cider.”

With more than 171 Certified Pommeliers representing over 15 countries, the examination will be hosted in Australia for the first time on Wednesday 14 October at Sydney Cidery. The examination will be led by American Cider Association Licensed Educator Lee Reeve as part of a nationwide cider education roadshow designed to support the continued growth of cider expertise across the sector.

Designed to elevate cider knowledge among hospitality professionals, beverage buyers, producers, retailers, and educators, the Australian roadshow will include a series of educational events and workshops, professional development opportunities and networking events.

“The Australian cider industry has developed a strong identity rooted in both innovation and regional expression. This roadshow is an opportunity to connect with cider professionals across the country, share knowledge, and help build a stronger global cider community,” says Reeve.

Registration for the Certified Pommelier examination is $350 USD, with discounted pricing for American Cider Association members.

Candidates must first earn the Certified Cider Guide designation to be eligible. As the foundational level of the CPP program, this prerequisite certification can be completed entirely online, offering a flexible format that allows candidates around the world to study at their own pace.
