Elderberry coffee liqueur

Elderberry coffee liqueur

A sweet, coffee-scented liqueur made from ripe elderberries is used as a medicine. Our grandmothers knew this, which is why they prepared it every year. The berries must be boiled, as they are slightly poisonous when eaten raw.

Ingredients · Servings 1 dose
  • 2 l ripe elderberries, plucked from the stems
  • 1 liter of water
  • 400g sugar
  • 2 teaspoons instant coffee
  • 1 l rum (or 1/2 l rum and 1/4 l pure vodka)
Method · 55 min
  1. Boil the washed elderberries in water for 15 minutes, then strain them through a sieve, mix with sugar and boil for about 7 minutes.
  2. After removing from the heat, add the instant coffee.
  3. Let the solution cool, preferably until the next day, and mix with alcohol. Before serving the liqueur, let it age for at least 1-2 weeks in filled bottles.
