Elderberries are just ripening. Try making homemade liqueur from them, ordinary coffee will give it a surprising taste

Elderberry is a plant that commonly grows in Czech gardens and on the edges of forests. Ripe dark fruits (elderberries) are used for syrups, juices, jams, wine and homemade liqueur. Elderberry liqueur is popular for its distinctive fruity taste, dark color and aroma reminiscent of autumn.

Homemade elderberry liqueur as an autumn treasure full of vitamins

Homemade elderberry liqueur is made from ripe black elderberries, which are dark purple to ruby in color. The taste of the berries is fruity, full-bodied and slightly sour. In addition to its use in cooking, black elderberries also have an interesting composition, as they contain a high percentage of vitamins and antioxidants. They are very suitable for natural treatment of cold and flu symptoms. Antioxidants help protect cells from oxidative stress.

However, this does not mean that a glass of elderberry liqueur works as a "medicine" or that an alcoholic beverage automatically provides the same effects as, for example, elderberry extract. Therefore, when it comes to homemade liqueur, it is better to talk primarily about a traditional folk drink and a delicacy containing plant substances.

The old proverb "Shrink before chamomile, kneel before elderberry", which our ancestors used to say, still applies today.

Elderberry liqueur has a distinctive flavor and beautiful color.

Unlike some industrial liqueurs, homemade elderberry liqueur can offer a very distinct taste of the fruit itself. That is why it is suitable not only for sipping, but also as a small amount of flavoring for desserts. Depending on the amount of sugar used, the liqueur can be significantly sweet or pleasantly fresh. Both alcoholic and completely alcohol-free variants can be made.

For people who cannot or do not want to consume alcohol, it makes more sense to use heat-processed elderberries, for example in syrup, juice or marmalade.

Pay attention to one important thing

It is not safe to consume large amounts of raw or underripe elderberries. Raw and unripe elderberries, as well as other parts of the plant, contain substances capable of releasing hydrogen cyanide, which can cause nausea, vomiting, or diarrhea. Cooking eliminates these toxic substances.

Therefore, fully ripe fruits and heat treatment are used in home processing. The stems, leaves, bark, and other parts of the bush are not edible.
