Patisserie 46 Has the Best Bread in the City

Patisserie 46 Has the Best Bread in the City

Along 46th Street between Kingfield and Tangletown lies a Parisian escape by way of patisserie. From quiche lorraine and macarons to bread, bread, and more bread, it’s confections capable of snagging a baking bronze medal that keep Minneapolis’s eponymous Patisserie 46 bustlin’ and bumpin’.

What to order

  • Go for the seasonal tarts, éclairs, and macarons (especially the sugary, buttery caramel macaron).
  • The quiche lorraine is everything a quiche should be — simultaneously dense and fluffy, bursting (but not overpowered) with caramelized onion, and anchored in a flaky crust.
  • You’ve gotta go for a cafe au lait, a French breakfast classic, to go with your pastries.

The vibe

A lot of places claim to be neighborhood spots, but Patisserie 46 really is. It’s the casual and cozy feel that makes dining here worth leaving your home, even in the winter. The ordering situation requires the formation of a long, singular line, though, and here in Minnesota that means dealing with performative politeness and passive aggressive enforcement.

Best seat in the house

The nearly floor-to-ceiling window banks offer plenty of sun-lit seating throughout, but the western windows stream light on tables situated around a fireplace, making them the best place to be.

Insider tip

Patisserie 46 has got bread to go, too. From sandwich-ready miche loaves to classic sourdough and baguettes, this is the place to do your bread shopping, too. Sometimes, if you’re lucky later in the day, you might get a baguette for free like I did once upon a time.
