Grandma's cakes

Yeast cakes are among the traditional sweet delicacies of Czech cuisine, which delight with their diversity. Everyone chooses the filling that they like the most, or comes up with a great combination of several of them. The only question remains: with or without crumbs.

Ingredients · Servings 1 dose
  • 500 g plain flour
  • 2 egg yolks
  • 250 ml milk
  • 6 sugar cubes
  • 200 ml oil
  • salt (as needed)
  • 42 g fresh yeast (1 cube)
  • filling according to taste
  • 1 egg
Method · 40 min
  1. Prepare a sourdough starter from lukewarm milk, sugar, a little flour and crumbled yeast, and let it rise.
  2. Add salt to the flour and mix. Add the yeast, egg yolks and oil.
  3. We knead the dough and let it rise.
  4. In time, preheat the oven to 180 °C. Line a baking sheet with baking paper.
  5. Divide the risen dough into parts, form them into buns and place them on a baking sheet.
  6. We crush the buns with our palms and make indentations with a mug (or glass). We fill them with any filling of our choice.
  7. Brush the edges with beaten egg. You can sprinkle the cakes with crumbs.
  8. Place in a preheated oven and bake until golden brown.
