A new study has revealed which food is the best source of protein

In her article for Yahoo! Creators, medical journalist Joni Sweet reported on the new study, scrutinized the rankings, spoke with nutrition experts, and tried to figure out why tofu ranked first.

Cambridge University researcher Chris McDonald developed a ranking of 20 foods, ranking them from best to worst in terms of protein-to-calorie ratio. Tofu topped the list. Moreover, plant proteins dominated the top half of the list—chia and sunflower seeds, beans, quinoa, lentils, peanuts, and chickpeas. Only two animal products—chicken breast and tuna—made it into the top ten.

Tofu is undoubtedly a very healthy food. I'll add that it's incredibly versatile in the kitchen. I've made everything from taco filling to chocolate mousse with it. Eating a variety of plant-based protein sources is beneficial for our health.

Eliza Bremner, nutritionist

Tofu not only contains a lot of protein, but also B vitamins, iron, calcium, and all nine essential amino acids. Moreover, it's best paired with fiber-rich vegetables.

This ranking took into account nutritional value, environmental impact, availability, and price, making tofu a good choice all-around, but not necessarily the most nutritious source of protein.

Melanie Murphy Richter, nutritionist

Experts advise not limiting yourself to tofu alone. A varied diet allows you to get the various nutrients your body needs.
