Fake nuggets? Profeco helps us identify them

Fake nuggets? Profeco helps us identify them

Nuggets that aren't made of chicken? Profeco tells us which ones they are.

The Federal Consumer Protection Agency, better known as Profeco, published a quality analysis of packaged chicken nuggets in Mexico through its Consumer Magazine. Profeco's mission is to protect consumers, and they have revealed the concerning information that some brands offer chicken nuggets with insufficient chicken meat. Discover which brands these are and why you shouldn't consume their counterfeit nuggets.

Fake nuggets? Profeco warns about 5 brands

It's not a very easy dish to make at home; it's much easier to make them on a large scale with hundreds of ingredients of dubious origin. But they are delicious, which is why people have opted to buy packages of frozen nuggets.

These packages from various brands were the ones tested. They are ultra-processed foods, which are not recommended for regular consumption, as they contain a high amount of saturated fats and salt.

But thanks to Profeco and its quality study, we discovered something much worse: several brands offer chicken nuggets without enough chicken meat. Eleven brands were analyzed, and the results revealed that five of them failed the tests.

Nugget brands you should be wary of

The five brands are Chicken Nuggets (Del Día), Chicken Breast Nuggets (Del Día), Griller's, Great Value and Bachoco Chicken Breast Nuggets. Each of these brands does not meet the pre-established conditions for making nuggets, for different reasons.

For one of the brands mentioned, it was not possible to identify the ingredients used in its products. The others had a low percentage of chicken meat, ranging from 33% to 53%.

The standard for these types of products is to have at least 70% chicken meat, which guarantees a quality product. It's important to note that some of these brands' other products also met this standard.

If they're not 100% chicken, what are they made of?

Most of these products may contain added chicken skin, cartilage, potato starch, flour, water, and salt. It is alarming to note how some companies in the food industry offer products of low nutritional quality. It is very important to consider this information in order to make an informed decision that benefits our health.

Although there are more brands that comply with the established regulations, it's very important to consider making your own nuggets at home. While it takes more time and is more complex to prepare, making them yourself will guarantee the correct percentage of chicken meat in your nuggets.

In addition, you could prepare them in a healthier way, without preservatives or additives, allowing you to enjoy a small treat without putting your health at risk.
