Flavors of the World: 10 Photos That Show How Food Connects Us

This year's winning photos include the everyday lives of markets and street food vendors, as well as agricultural work, family meals, and even the human moments of hospitality.

One of the world's most prestigious gastronomic photography competitions received entries from over fifty countries this year. The works selected by the jury show that food is a universal language: it is simultaneously connected to work, holidays, identity and human relationships.

This year's overall winning photo (shown on the cover) was taken in a sanatorium in Tajikistan and captures a seemingly simple moment: an elderly woman pouring herself tea in the dining room. According to the jury, the photo stands out from the competition for its restraint and human touch.

Among the winners was the work of a Hungarian photographer. Balázs Lehóczki had been planning to take a portrait of his grandparents for years, but for a long time he felt that he was not ready to capture them. When the day of the photo shoot finally came, his grandmother went to the hairdresser, his grandfather shaved, and Balázs set up his studio equipment in the family kitchen. The finished image touched not only the jury: when the grandmother saw the portrait, she called her grandson an artist.
