Grandma's Stuffed Potato Roll: Try Two Fillings, One Is Better Than the Other

Grandma's Stuffed Potato Roll: Try Two Fillings, One Is Better Than the Other

Potato roulades are a quick and almost universal dish that you can prepare half an hour before your guests arrive and keep in suitable conditions for later. And how many types of roulades are there? Infinitely many, and each one is perfect thanks to the sweet or savory filling used.

Potato roulades in the main role

Potato roulade is one of those dishes that looks festive, but can save an ordinary lunch or dinner. Its great advantage is variability. The base is usually boiled potatoes, which can be supplemented with meat, cheese, spinach, mushrooms, vegetables or even sausage. The filling can be adapted to what you find in the fridge.

The most famous are the savory versions. A potato roulade filled with minced meat is very often prepared, which resembles a classic meatloaf. You can add onion, garlic, herbs or cheese to the meat filling.

Ham and cheese are also a popular combination. For example, Edam, Gouda or mozzarella are suitable, or stronger cheeses with a more intense flavor. When baked, the filling combines beautifully with the potato base and creates neat spirals when cut.

A fall variation could be a mushroom roulade. You can enhance the fried mushrooms with onion, garlic and a little herbs, or spinach, leek, broccoli or roasted peppers. Leftovers from roast meat or chicken can be turned into a filling that would otherwise end up in the fridge.

Roulade doesn't have to be just a main course

Potato roulade can be cut into smaller slices and served as a warm snack. In this case, it is advisable to choose a more substantial filling, such as cheese, ham, bacon or a combination of meat and vegetables. Smaller pieces are also suitable for a visit as part of a cold or warm buffet.

If you want to make the roulade in advance, it is important to let it cool first. Then store it in the refrigerator in a well-sealed container or wrap it tightly so that it does not dry out and does not absorb odors from other foods. It should be consumed within a few days in the refrigerator, depending on the ingredients used. You can heat it in the oven before serving, which will enhance the aroma of the potatoes, cheese and filling.

For longer storage, some potato rolls can also be frozen. The most practical way is to divide them into portions, wrap them well and store them in the freezer. After defrosting, simply reheat the roll thoroughly in the oven. However, for fillings with a higher amount of water, such as some vegetable mixtures, the consistency may be slightly softer after defrosting.
