A Taiwanese Spot Serving Some of Manhattan’s Best Breakfast Has Expanded
The tiny East Village Ho Foods (110 E. Seventh Street, at First Avenue) from Richard Ho, serving some of the city’s best beef noodle soup, along with chile wontons, sesame noodles, radish cakes, and breakfast, has expanded to the next-door space with around 30 seats.
Elvis opens tomorrow on Great Jones
Small plates and natural wine spot Elvis opens on Tuesday, September 10, according to a spokesperson, in what had been Jolene, and before that the Jones, both from Gabriel Stulman (a revival of the space that was previously the Great Jones Cafe with its 35-year run). The restaurant comes from Golden Age Hospitality, behind hot spots like the Nines, Le Dive, and Deux Chats in partnership with Paradise Projects, behind bars like Mister Paradise. The 30-seat restaurant has a menu of pate, rillettes, and tartare, among other dishes.
A new croissant bakery has opened
Building off a New York croissant fetish, Tall Poppy has opened at 156 W. 20th Street, at Seventh Avenue, with a menu specializing in croissants of all sorts: classic, chocolate, pistachio, as well as novel combinations like goat cheese, hot honey, and pecan as well as lemon curd, meringue, and poppy seed. Prices are $6.50 to $9. The name might refer to tall poppy syndrome, the term from Australia and New Zealand in which someone is attacked for their success.
A James Beard Award benefit at Citi Field
Tickets are on sale for the Stadium Chef Series to benefit the James Beard Foundation. The event takes place on Friday, September 27 at Citi Field in Queens. Participating chefs include James Beard Award finalist Fariyal Abdullahi of Hav & Mar, Markus Glocker of Koloman, Preston Clark of Lure Fishbar, and Camari Mick of Musket Room and Raf’s, among others, with TV host Adam Richman as emcee.
