Mayan tacos, suckling pig sandwiches, and octopus tostadas! There will be a Quintana Roo Festival in Chapultepec

Mayan tacos, suckling pig sandwiches, and octopus tostadas! There will be a Quintana Roo Festival in Chapultepec

This weekend, the Quintana Roo Festival at Los Pinos will bring all the flavors of Mayan and Caribbean cuisine to Chapultepec Forest.

According to the Ministry of Culture of the Government of Mexico, which is in charge of organizing the event, the intention of the festival is to allow visitors to Los Pinos to learn about the artistic and gastronomic richness of Quintana Roo by interacting firsthand with its cooks and artisans.

“We want Los Pinos to be a space where the cultures of the states meet with audiences from other regions and are recognized by those who create and keep them alive,” explained Claudia Curiel de Icaza, Secretary of Culture of the Government of Mexico.

Mayan food arrives at Chapultepec Forest this weekend

Thus, during the weekend, in the heart of Chapultepec Forest, you will be able to find the typical dishes of the fusion between Mayan and Afro-Caribbean food that characterizes the gastronomy of Quintana Roo.

The culinary offerings will include delicacies such as castacán tacos, a cut of pork that combines the flavors of carnitas and chicharrón through pieces of meat and fat wrapped in a thin layer of skin. Also available will be traditional roasted suckling pig tortas wrapped in jabim leaves.

For those craving seafood, there will also be octopus tostadas with three chilies.

Another dish you can try is chicken salbutes with Edam cheese. It's a delicious fried corn tortilla, similar to a panucho.

But that's not all. Other dishes and drinks from Quintana Roo that can be found in the First Section of Chapultepec Forest include:

  • Kibis with ground meat accompanied by pickled onions.
  • Bitter orange water
  • Pitaya water
  • Chalupitas de chaya
  • Coated eggs
