So many excellent things are on the menu at Jose but don’t skip over the coconut ceviche made with mahi mahi and coconut milk. It’s fresh and bright and perfect for late spring into early summer.

Neighborhood Services

Sometimes you want a classic American bite. At the Oak Lawn location of Neighborhood Services, the Dungeness Crab Dip was a stunner, the steak frites (pictured above) were as reliable as always, and the seared scallops served on polenta with dried chorizo and charred tomato sofrito was the ideal spring dinner.

Restaurant Beatrice

It’s always a pleasure to return and dine again at one of our local James Beard Award-nominated restaurants. Its second cochon sustainability dinner featured meals all made from one gigantic roast pig raised on the family ranch of chef Michelle Carpenter. Pictured here are the starters: a sweet tea brined riblet, a mini andouille corn dog, and a mini pork po-boy. The entire dinner saw pork prepared and served seven ways.

Taquero

Doing some Mexican cuisine work ahead of Cinco de Mayo finally yielded the chance to stop into Taquero at the corner of Ross and Greenville. The lunch platter of the cochi pork served with chile de arbol and pulla chile came with a warning that it might be hot, depending on who was making it that day — and with a side of housemade tortillas. It was covered by a hearty chile-based sauce that wasn’t too hot but made a big impression.
