Gunman Opened Fire Into One of Lower Manhattan’s Essential Dive Bars

A gunman opened fire into longstanding Lower Manhattan dive bar Tom & Jerry’s early in the morning on Saturday, March 1, killing an employee, Gothamist reports. A police investigation is underway. No arrests have been made yet.

According to police reports, a gunman started shooting into the bar after 3 a.m. on Saturday morning. The employee, whom the New York Post identifies as a part-time bouncer at the bar, was shot three times in the chest and stomach. He was rushed to Bellevue Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Police are unsure if the employee was targeted, according to the Post.

Tom & Jerry’s, located at 288 Elizabeth Street, near East Houston Street, in Nolita, is a decades-old, cash-only Manhattan dive bar that gained a reputation as a tech industry hangout and was once featured on the hit HBO show Girls. It was closed as of Saturday evening in the wake of the shooting.
