Which Fast Food Chains Use Real Cheese? We Investigated

We looked at whether major fast-food chains use natural cheese or processed cheese slices and sauces.

Which Fast Food Chains Use Real Cheese? We Investigated
  • Chick-fil-A, Wendy’s, Taco Bell, and Culver’s all offer natural cheeses like Pepper Jack, Asiago, mozzarella, and cheddar.
  • Even most processed American cheese still contains real dairy cheese—it’s just formulated differently.

Cheese is one of those fast food ingredients you probably don’t think too hard about until someone asks what it actually is. That perfectly melted slice on your burger might look like cheddar, but in many cases, it’s a processed American-style cheese made from real dairy cheese plus additional ingredients that help it melt smoothly and consistently.

So, when we say “real cheese” here, we’re talking about natural cheeses made primarily from milk, cultures, salt, and enzymes, like cheddar, pepper jack, or asiago, versus processed cheese slices and sauces that combine cheese with emulsifiers and other ingredients. For this list, we narrowed things down.

To qualify, a chain had to use a natural cheese on at least one permanent-menu entrée—not just a cheese sauce, processed American slice, side dish, or limited-time item. That makes the list shorter than you might expect, but these chains actually make the cut.

Chick-fil-A

Chick-fil-A gives you a few real-cheese options beyond the standard American slice.

The chain lets you add Colby-Jack or pepper Jack to its sandwiches. Its ingredient lists show that the Pepper Jack is made with pasteurized milk, peppers, cheese culture, salt, and enzymes.

The Colby-Jack combines Colby and Monterey Jack cheeses made with pasteurized milk, cultures, salt, and enzymes. In other words, if you’re looking for a fast food sandwich with a straightforward natural cheese, Chick-fil-A absolutely gives you that option.

Taco Bell

Taco Bell’s Cheese Quesadilla is made with a Three-Cheese Blend of mozzarella, pepper Jack, and cheddar, along with Creamy Jalapeño Sauce. The chain also uses that shredded cheese blend across other menu items, so if you’re looking for actual shredded cheese at a major fast-food chain, Taco Bell definitely qualifies.

Wendy’s

Wendy’s might win the prize for making fast food cheese sound the fanciest.

The chain currently sells its Asiago Ranch Club Sandwich with Asiago cheese, alongside other burgers that use American cheese. Asiago is a natural Italian-style cheese, which feels surprisingly upscale compared with the usual American slice.

If you told me one national fast food chain was casually putting Asiago on a chicken sandwich, Wendy’s probably would not have been my first guess.

Culver’s

It would be a little embarrassing for a Wisconsin-based chain not to bring real cheese to the table, and Culver’s does not disappoint. Its Wisconsin Cheese Curds are made using fresh Wisconsin cheddar, according to the chain’s menu.

Also, its Sourdough Melt uses naturally aged Wisconsin cheddar, while the Wisconsin Swiss Melt uses real Wisconsin Swiss. Culver’s specifically describes the cheese as being made from farm-fresh dairy.

The curds are probably one of the strongest examples on this list of a fast food item where the cheese itself is the entire point.

Chipotle

Chipotle uses shredded Monterey Jack across its menu, including burritos, bowls, tacos, and quesadillas. Its allergen information specifically identifies the ingredient as shredded Monterey Jack cheese.

Chipotle also uses Monterey Jack and white cheddar in its Queso Blanco, but the shredded cheese is the cleaner example here since it’s a straightforward natural cheese added directly to entrées.
