French toast will be tastier if you swap frying for simpler method
French toast is a delicious and indulgent breakfast, but frying it on the hob can be a bit of a faff. Luckily, there's a much simpler method to prepare it

“The first time I made French toast in the oven, I couldn't believe how easy and delicious it was. It's been my go-to ever since. And I'd be willing to bet that, once you try it, it'll become yours too!”
French toast makes for the perfect breakfast when you're in the mood for something warm and comforting, yet making it on the hob can seem like an unnecessary hassle for many. Standing over a frying pan first thing in the morning is hardly appealing, not just because it takes time, but because it invariably results in oil splashing all over the kitchen surfaces.
It's also remarkably easy for the oil to cook the outside of the bread too quickly, resulting in a burnt exterior while the middle stays soggy and undercooked. Fortunately, Michelle, who founded Now Cook This, has shared a far simpler method - baking French toast in the oven. Michelle said: "The first time I made French toast in the oven, I couldn't believe how easy and delicious it was.

Many are simply unaware that French toast can be baked in the oven, which means there's no longer any need to stand by the hob constantly flipping the bread. This technique enables you to cook a substantial batch all at once without requiring constant supervision, giving you the freedom to make a coffee, put the kettle on, or simply relax while it cooks. Baking French toast in the oven also guarantees that every section of the bread is cooked evenly, creating a satisfyingly crisp finish without any danger of burning or leaving the centre uncooked.
Choosing the oven is not only considerably more convenient, but it also means you will avoid the mess of a splattered hob or the chore of scrubbing a scorched frying pan afterwards. This is quite simply a better method for producing restaurant-standard French toast without excessive effort, enabling you to enjoy your breakfast rather than spending it hovering anxiously over a hot stove.
You will need:
- Eight slices of brioche bread
- Four large eggs
- 240ml of whole milk
- One teaspoon of vanilla extract
- Half a teaspoon of cinnamon
- Pinch of salt (about a quarter teaspoon)
- Butter (optional)
- Maple syrup (optional)
- Cooking spray
Method: Start by preheating the oven to 220°C (200°C for fan ovens or Gas Mark 7), then liberally coat a large sheet pan tray with cooking spray.
Break the eggs into a medium-sized bowl, then add the milk, cinnamon, vanilla extract, and salt. Whisk everything together until all the ingredients are fully combined.
Pour the egg mixture into the tray, then lay the bread slices in a single layer on top. Allow the bread to sit in the tray for one minute to soak up the mixture, before turning it over. Leave them for a few minutes until all of the egg batter has been completely absorbed.
Then, place in the oven for 10 to 12 minutes until the French toast is beautifully crispy and golden. Serve straight away from the oven, adding butter, maple syrup or any other toppings you fancy.
