Madelyn Cline, Madison Bailey and Carlacia Grant on ‘Outer Banks,’ Pizza and More

Welcome back to the Pizza Interview, a series from New York Times Cooking where the Q&A has a catch: Our guests have to make pizza.

Madelyn Cline, Madison Bailey and Carlacia Grant on ‘Outer Banks,’ Pizza and More

Madelyn Cline, Madison Bailey and Carlacia Grant have played adventurous teenagers looking for hidden treasure in the fan-favorite mystery drama, “Outer Banks,” which has coursed through five seasons. Though their on-screen risky exploits have concluded, the ladies made sure to bring their characters’ sense of adventure to the kitchen.

Below or on YouTube, watch the pizza toppings pile on — Ms. Grant had four quadrants with different toppings on her pie — as the cast chats about food, the last season of their show and more. Here are excerpts from the interview and the outtakes, which have been edited and condensed.

Have you ever made a pizza before? MADELYN CLINE I think so.

GRANT I made the viral Trader Joe’s one. BAILEY I love a T.J.’s pizza.

CLINE I don’t know that one. BAILEY It’s really, you just acquire the pizza dough.

GRANT And you put it together. Where do you get your recipes?

BAILEY I’m a TikTok method girlie. I’m in the kitchen when I’m at people’s houses, I’m in the kitchen at restaurants.

What’s your favorite pizza place? GRANT [Frank] Pepe’s pizza. CLINE I really love Joe’s.

BAILEY I didn’t grow up with, like, high pizza class. CLINE I think Madison and Carlacia both, equally.

The last time I cooked I was in charge of salad and —— BAILEY How’d you mess it up?

CLINE I tried to make the croutons. I forgot they were in the oven, and then I remembered much later, and I peeked in the oven, and they were on fire.

I didn't know what to do. GRANT Turning the oven off would be a start.

I turned the oven off, and they were still on fire. So I took the pan out of the oven with my burning croutons, and I put a bunch of water on it. BAILEY I caught the oven on fire my first time using broil, and I just thought that was the setting and I was like, Oh, that just doesn’t work.

And I didn’t use it again for 10 more years. I was trying to make s’mores dip.

Have you ever worked in the food service trade? GRANT I worked at the Cheesecake Factory. CLINE I worked in a food truck one time.

In South Carolina, very close to where we film “Outer Banks,” I worked a food truck where they didn’t let me cook. But they did have me at the cash register, and I was in charge of cash registering and coffee.

There were some disgruntled customers since I had to do all the math in my head. What’s the first thing the three of you bonded over on set?

CLINE Both of our names being Maddie.

CLINE “Whoa, we have so much in common.”

BAILEY We’re really deep. CLINE And then Carlacia came, and we bonded over rum.

Have you ever cooked for someone on a date? BAILEY Yes, there’s actually nothing worse since I’ve never been more emphasised preparation for someone that is waiting for the food.

Like, lingering near the kitchen. If the cast of “Outer Banks” owned a restaurant, what would everyone’s roles be? GRANT I feel like I’d be the chef.

What about Chase [Stokes] and Drew [Starkey]? BAILEY They’d take out the trash.

That is an weighty role. What’s your go-to “girl dinner”?

BAILEY Honestly, just like a large fry. How do you feel about eating food in bed?

BAILEY It really depends on what it is. GRANT No crab boil in bed.

BAILEY Glad we have requirements to this. There’s nothing that overstimulates me more than crumbs in bed.

Looking back at your time on “Outer Banks,” what’s the most outrageous thing that has happened on- or offscreen? BAILEY Oh, probably the dock collapsing, you guys.

BAILEY We film on the water a lot, and we were filming on a dock and, like, the dock collapsed. The entire crew and cameras, in the water.

I would say that was pretty insane. If you were a food dish, what would you be? Can you answer for each other?

GRANT Ooh, [looking at Madison] she’d be ——

BAILEY Something that’s not for everybody.

GRANT I was going to say something fruity. BAILEY [Laughs] Something fruity!

GRANT Cline, you would be ——

CLINE A salad with burnt croutons.

BAILEY A dinosaur nuggie. This you for real. [Holds up a dinosaur nugget] CLINE With buffalo and ranch.

You would be a comfort food. CLINE And then Lace [their nickname for Carlacia].

It’s one of my favorite foods. BAILEY It’s like omakase.
