Slipping a bay leaf into an opened bag of flour: what is it for and why is it recommended?
You might have some bay leaves at the back of one of your cupboards, not quite knowing what to do with them. Inexpensive, they can nevertheless be used for a very simple trick that goes beyond simply enhancing the flavor of a dish.
Some people have taken to slipping a bay leaf into their already opened bag of flour. This practice may seem surprising, but according to Marie France, it's based on a perfectly natural phenomenon. Bay leaves release aromatic compounds that can deter pests, thus keeping them away from foodstuffs like rice, pasta, or flour.
Slip a bay leaf into the flour: a simple and effective trick
Bay laurel, scientifically known as Laurus nobilis, is renowned for its aromatic properties. Even after drying, its leaves retain essential oils that release a characteristic scent. For us, it's a rather pleasant fragrance, but for insects, it acts as a natural repellent.
Placing one or two leaves directly in a bag of flour, or near food, can reduce the risk of infestation. Note that this method is not intended to replace treatments for an existing infestation. It is primarily a preventative measure.
If you wish to try this tip at home, you should use bay leaves in good condition. Be sure to store them in an airtight container, away from moisture and light. A sealed glass jar will do the trick and will be sufficient to preserve the properties of these leaves for several months, sometimes even up to two years.
To check their effectiveness, you can gently crush the leaf. If it still releases a strong scent, it's still usable. But if the smell is too weak or mold appears on the leaf, it's time to replace it.
Multiple uses in the home
Bay leaves can be used all over the house, not just in the kitchen. You can use them to freshen your closets and drawers by placing them in small fabric sachets. Similarly, they help to reduce unpleasant odors in storage boxes or shoes, for example.
Some people also use it near windows or in living areas to create a healthier atmosphere. It can help keep insects away, but in case of an infestation, it's best to call in professionals.
