Ordering pizza for a group has its pros and cons. Everyone eats pizza, but someone has to decide how many to buy, and the answer varies depending on the style. Detroit-style, thick-crust Chicago-style, or diner-style pizzas don't go as far as the medium-thick round pizza cut into triangles, which is the typical image that comes to mind when you say "pizza."

That's why the calculation is based on that type of pizza. If money isn't an issue and leftovers are used, a rough estimate is sufficient; on a daily basis, a more precise calculation is needed. The conventional formula, recommended by both large chains and small businesses, yields eight pizzas for 20 people.

A typical large pizza is 35.5 cm in diameter and is divided into eight slices. The rule of three allows for an average of three slices per person, so eight eight-slice pizzas total 64 slices, slightly more than needed for 20 people. This calculation works the same for a popular American chain as it does for the corner pizzeria.

Whoever orders the pizzas will want to give the impression that there's always more, because the last thing they want is for the guests to think something is missing. The worst possible outcome is having a manageable amount of "extra pizza" left over, an expression that, according to some, doesn't even exist.
