Cilantro enhances the natural flavor of blueberries

Cilantro enhances the natural flavor of blueberries

Adding cilantro to dishes with blueberries intensifies their flavor thanks to linalool, a compound that both ingredients share and that creates a deeper experience.

When cooking with blueberries, avoiding those that aren't perfectly ripe is crucial. But even with the best blueberries, you miss an opportunity to enhance their flavor if you don't incorporate a simple spice: coriander.

Cilantro is earthy and slightly sweet, with citrus notes that make it an excellent complement to cranberries, which are often served with lemon. What truly makes cilantro pair perfectly with cranberries is its high linalool content, a terpene that gives plants their pleasant aroma. This compound lends the spice a floral flavor. Since cranberries also contain linalool, combining them intensifies the flavor, creating a richer experience in pancakes, quick breads, cakes, pies, sauces, and barbecue marinades.

Lavender and sweet basil are also good sources of linalool and can complement both the fruit and the spice. It's quite easy to enhance a recipe with cilantro. Simply add the spice before cooking. You don't need much cilantro to bring out the bold flavor of cranberries; a pinch or two will do.

If you have leftover cilantro, use it in other dishes. It's frequently used in meat dishes and is ideal for seasoning vegetables. It pairs well with other fruits: try it with apples, plums, and citrus fruits. It also works well on eggs, incorporated into bread dough, or even in chocolate desserts.
