Avocado toast is a popular healthy breakfast idea that is quick and easy to make, but it can taste bland without the right seasoning Avocado toast has emerged as a go-to breakfast during the summer months, as it's straightforward to prepare in the morning.

It's an affordable and satisfying meal that includes more fruit in any diet, but avocado can be rather bland if you simply mash it onto toast without proper seasoning. Avocados are an unusual fruit as they lack the sweetness or tartness of most others, yet have gained popularity due to their abundance of healthy fats that lend them an incredibly creamy consistency.

This makes avocados wonderfully soft, complementing eggs or toast perfectly. Nutritionally, avocado provides mostly monounsaturated fat, plus fibre, potassium and several vitamins.

Adding protein, such as eggs, cottage cheese, smoked salmon or beans, makes it a more substantial breakfast or lunch. However, one ingredient can help transform boring avocado - lemon juice, reports the Express.

Lemon juice is acidic, which helps penetrate the fats and amplify the flavour of avocados, making them taste considerably more lively. Adding lemon juice to avocado produces a wonderfully fresh, buttery and subtly nutty flavour that will elevate your breakfast.

You will need:

  • One ripe avocado
  • Two slices of bread
  • Two teaspoons of lemon juice
  • One teaspoon of olive oil
  • Salt and pepper
  • Red pepper flakes, smoked paprika or garlic powder (optional)

Method: First and foremost, ensure you're using a ripe avocado, as it will spread far more easily onto your toast. An unripe one is likely to tear the bread and create unnecessary mess.

Simply cut the avocado in half and place one half into a bowl. Add a generous squeeze of lemon juice along with a drizzle of olive oil.

Season with salt and pepper, then mash the avocado thoroughly with a fork until you achieve a smooth, even consistency. Toast your bread until it turns golden brown and crisp, then spread the avocado mixture generously across the surface. The result is an avocado toast that's richer and more refreshing, yet remains remarkably straightforward to prepare.

You can also add seasonings such as red pepper flakes, smoked paprika or garlic powder, though none of these are essential — lemon juice alone is the real secret to unlocking a more flavourful avocado.
