Hokkaido's delicious roasted pumpkin puree is easy to prepare and keeps for a long time.
Pumpkin puree is a delicious, semi-finished homemade product that you can use in both sweet and savory dishes. The popular Hokkaido pumpkin is the best variety for making puree.
Pumpkin puree has multiple uses in the kitchen. You can easily prepare it in the fall to have it on hand whenever you need it. The characteristic color of pumpkin will perfectly complement your favorite pies and savory dishes. But that's not all. The puree can be added to the batter for pumpkin bread, pancakes, muffins, and even cake. In short, if you have pumpkins at home, there's always something to cook or prepare.
How to make pumpkin puree
This purée has many uses. Come and prepare it quickly and easily with us so you always have it on hand. You'll only need Hokkaido pumpkin, nothing else.
Cut the washed pumpkin in half and remove the seeds and flesh. This is easy with a sturdy spoon. You can use more pumpkins, if you prefer. Don't peel them, as Hokkaido pumpkins have a delicate, edible skin that adds a vibrant color to dishes.
Place the pumpkin halves in a deep baking tray, cut side down. Add approximately 0.5 cm of water to the tray.
Place the tray with the pumpkin in the oven preheated to 180°C (350°F) and bake until completely soft. Cooking time varies between 60 and 90 minutes, depending on the size of the pumpkin. To check if it's ready, pierce the pumpkin with a fork.
After baking, let the pumpkin cool completely.
If it has a tough skin, simply scoop out the pulp. However, in the case of Hokkaido avocados, you can also puree them with the skin on, as it's delicate. This will speed up the process and prevent unnecessary waste.
Blend the pulp in a blender until you get a completely homogeneous mixture, adding a little water if necessary.
Transfer the finished puree to a colander and let it drain. Wait at least an hour.
Next, simply pour the purée (that is, the cooked and mashed pulp) into jars. A funnel designed for canning will make the task easier and prevent unnecessarily dirtying the rims of the jars.
After filling the jars, clean them and seal them with screw-on lids.
If you plan to use the puree soon, keep it in the refrigerator for now. To store it longer, boil it or freeze it in containers. For younger children, freeze it in small portions.
Simply boil it, but it tastes better and its color is more intense if it is baked.
What is pumpkin puree good for?
You can season pumpkin puree to your liking and serve it with meat; it's also ideal for grilled dishes. Furthermore, it's perfect for making mashed potatoes, either mixed in with the potatoes or served separately. Undoubtedly, the most popular way to use pumpkin puree is in pies.
