How to Easily Crack a Walnut Shell?

How to Easily Crack a Walnut Shell?

Cracking hard-shelled walnuts can be time-consuming and may even break the kernel if the correct method isn't used. Especially with walnuts with thick shells, it's more successful to utilize the shell's natural structure rather than randomly hitting it.

-

Soak Walnuts in Lukewarm Water: One practical way to make cracking walnut shells easier is to soak them in lukewarm water. Keeping the walnuts in lukewarm water for about 15-20 minutes can help soften the shells slightly. After removing them from the water, it's necessary to dry the walnuts thoroughly with a clean cloth. Trying to crack them while they are damp can cause them to slip and lead to accidents. This method can be especially helpful for walnuts with very hard shells.

-

Use a Nutcracker: A sturdy nutcracker designed for cracking walnuts is one of the safest ways to open the shell in a controlled manner. When placing the walnut in the nutcracker's chamber, it's important to align the shell's seam with the nut. Applying controlled pressure instead of squeezing too hard all at once can prevent the kernel from shattering. Once you feel the shell crack, release the pressure and separate the pieces with your hand. This method saves time and reduces the risk of hand injury, especially when cracking a large number of walnuts.

-

Target the Shell Joint: A walnut shell has a natural line where two parts meet, and cracking is easier when applied at this point. Instead of randomly hitting the walnut against a hard surface, aligning the joint line with the pressure point of the cracking tool is more controlled. This allows the shell to open more smoothly. If you want the kernel to remain intact, it's important to increase pressure gradually. Applying light and controlled force to the correct point will prevent you from using unnecessary excessive force.

-

Try Gently Heating in the Oven: For walnuts with very hard shells, applying gentle heat can make it easier to open the shell. Briefly heating walnuts in a low-temperature oven can help loosen the shell structure. However, caution should be exercised as using high temperatures can cause the oils inside the walnut to heat up and alter its taste. After the heated walnuts have completely cooled, they can be cracked carefully with a nutcracker. When using this method, it is important not to overheat the walnuts and to monitor them during the process.
