Hosteria Amedeo in Monte Porzio Catone. Since 1960, Hosteria Amedeo has been offering authentic cuisine typical of the Castelli Romani region in Monte Porzio Catone, featuring authentic recipes and local ingredients. Today, Emanuele, Amedeo's great-grandson, is at the helm. He has dedicated himself to respecting and enhancing the authentic identity of the inn, which has been in his family for generations, day after day. He celebrates the local area and promotes local products, while also paying attention to the evolution of gastronomy and balancing the ideas of great-grandfather Amedeo with those of the modern kitchen brigade. With a menu that respects seasonality, Hosteria Amedeo strives to convey the essence of a traditional inn.
A family tradition in the Castelli Romani
In the 1960s, Amedeo produced the famous Castelli Romani wine, and the tavern began as a typical Castelli Romani fraschetta: a place where you could enjoy this wine while bringing your own food. "Hosteria Amedeo was born out of the need to sell wine," Emanuele explains, "so my grandfather wouldn't drink it all by himself." Year after year, along with the wine, they began serving fried zucchini flowers, rice balls, and beans with pork rind, until 1988 saw the turning point and this small business transformed into a trattoria.
In 2002, management passed to Stefania, Emanuele's mother. The Cristofari family's culinary tradition has been perpetuated for generations. Today, Hosteria Amedeo continues to perfectly convey its unpretentious essence, always serving authentic, high-quality products. Guests are welcomed by a counter displaying regional delicacies, cheeses, cured meats, and other delicacies, a small dining room with a fireplace perfect for winter days, and an outdoor terrace protected by a pergola for warmer days.
The kitchen of Hosteria Amedeo
In the kitchen, Giordano and Salvatore continue the Cristofari family tradition, adding an international twist dedicated to their South American colleagues, like Cristobal, who comes to Hosteria Amedeo after a stint at the Michelin-starred Sintesi in Ariccia, which inspires dishes like veal tongue, carrots, and chimichurri (9 euros). "I'm thinking of adding a Spanish-inspired dish to the new menu," Giordano previews, "a tortilla with potatoes and onions accompanied by a chicken liver ragù, somewhat reminiscent of supplì. It's wonderful to respect and be able to express the cultural influences between peoples on a gastronomic level through our dishes, and rediscover them in the tradition of Italian cuisine."
Hosteria Amedeo's menu combines traditional dishes with revisited classics: innovative dishes with balanced flavors and options suitable for all dietary requirements. Currently, the seasonal menu offers dishes such as Roman-style artichokes with mint mayo (8 euros), paccheri alla amatriciana with smoked bacon (10 euros), gnocchetti alla vignarola with crispy bacon (12 euros), and the panbrioche, mutton, fennel, and cacciatore sauce (9 euros), which deserves a special mention. We're also impressed by the menu's supplier list, which transparently displays the local suppliers who source the local ingredients for Hosteria Amedeo's dishes.
The regional winery of Hosteria Amedeo
Emanuele was one of the first restaurateurs in the Castelli Romani area to develop a Lazio-centric wine list, pursuing his own path, sometimes counter-trend, but always with a deep love for the region and its products. Although it boasts a few international references, the Hosteria Amedeo cellar remains an excellent place to taste some of the finest wines from the Lazio region, produced by wineries like Damiano Ciolli and Abbia Nova, as well as Castelli Romani producers like Ribelà, Merumalia, Gabriele Magno, Riserva della Cascina, and Artico.
Those who wish can visit the winery directly to select the bottle that piques their interest and taste it at the table alongside their dishes. This unusual format allows guests to become intimate with the restaurant and its products. Hosteria Amedeo also promotes the wineries of the Lazio region through events.
