Make This Capitol Hill Restaurant Your Next Date-Night Spot

Single Shot is in Capitol Hill, but not the helllll-yeah-we’re-going-OUT part of Capitol Hill. It’s on a sleepy block of Summit Avenue surrounded mostly by low-rise apartment buildings, and therefore easy to overlook — but step inside the restaurant and you’ll be greeted by a gorgeous marble wrap-around bar, moody lighting, and a fantastic, if amorphous, menu.

What to order

  • The food here from executive chef Antonio Palma leans Italian but draws inspiration from all over. While you’re scanning the ever-changing menu, order an order of thick, airy focaccia for the table ($9 for a small, $15 for a large), and don’t skimp on the umami-loaded (but almost sweet) black garlic butter.
  • The big-plate star here is the tender, juicy, pork chop, with sides that change seasonally. In winter, look forward to a delicate gochujang glace and a bed of creamy grits ($52).
  • The cocktail menu here is full of creative flourishes and unusual tweaks — walnut liquor in an Old Fashion for a layer of nuttiness, a take on a mezcal Negroni that includes a dose of spicy chile liquor (all cocktails are $16.

Best for

Single Shot is small enough that coming here as a big party might be difficult — but it’s the perfect size for an intimate, romantic dinner.

Insider tip

If you’ve never tried to park in this part of the Hill, know that it can be brutal to find a spot. It’s not super convenient for public transportation either. In a pinch, there are a few paid parking lots and garages a few blocks west of Summit, particularly along Broadway.
