La delicada hamburguesa nórdica elaborada con carne de reno

Aunque la carne de reno apenas aparece en los menús estadounidenses, en Escandinavia es más habitual, y una hamburguesa con arándanos rojos parece una adaptación apropiada para su clima frío.

The recipe is simple: reindeer meat, ground like the beef in a traditional hamburger, served in a soft brioche-style bun with onions, mushrooms, and Gouda cheese. It's topped with a cranberry jam, slightly tart and typical of Scandinavian cuisine.

Reindeer meat has a long culinary tradition in the northern regions of Scandinavia. Indigenous peoples of the Arctic Circle (Finland, Sweden, and Norway) have used it in their diet and revered it as sacred for thousands of years. Cranberries are also part of the cuisine of indigenous peoples in that region, including Alaska.

Reindeer meat is quite lean, which is reflected in its delicate texture, and is generally healthier than beef or other red meats, as it has less fat and fewer calories. It is rich in Omega-3 and B-12 vitamins and has a high protein content. An article from the University of Tromsø in Norway concluded that it is as healthy as fish. Cranberries, according to Healthline, are rich in antioxidants and promote gut health. Jam recipes usually contain some sugar, but overall, the burger is quite healthy.

Regarding its flavor, Norwegian food writer Andreas Viestad told Outside: "Reindeer has an intense, gamey, sweet, and extremely complex flavor."

Like most venison, reindeer can also be served as a steak or tenderloin. While still relatively uncommon on menus, it has gained popularity in some places, even in burger form. Gordon Ramsay has a Finnish reindeer burger recipe, using Dijon mustard instead of cranberry jam. The Norwegian cheesemaker Jarlsberg offers the Northern Temptation burger, featuring Jarlsberg cheese instead of Gouda.

Reindeer are also sold as sausages. They've long been popular in Alaska, where they can even be found at street stalls. Comparing them to the New York hot dog is a matter of debate.
