I compared Birds Eye potato waffles to four supermarket versions

Potato waffles are a favourite amongst children and grown-ups alike. They're a staple in freezers throughout the country, though there's no shortage of different varieties on offer.

It can be challenging to know which will deliver the best taste while also providing decent value for money. Birds Eye produces a branded potato waffle that has stayed popular for many years. That said, most of the leading UK supermarkets also stock their own unbranded alternatives. Given all the choices on the market, I resolved to try out several potato waffles to discover which tastes best.

I tried potato waffles from Aldi , Lidl, Tesco , Asda , and Birds Eye and was taken aback by the results. I cooked all the potato waffles in the oven according to their instructions.

Lidl - £1.45

At the bottom of my rankings sat Lidl, as its potato waffle proved far too bland. It emerged from the oven wrinkled and fractured. While it possessed a solid crunch, the interior was excessively dry for my taste. Following one mouthful, I'd experienced enough.

Asda - £1.44

Following that was Asda, which proved considerably superior to Lidl. It looked similar to Birds Eye's potato waffles, though it was substantially thicker. It was firm with an agreeable crunch and contained a light, fluffy potato centre. Nevertheless, it was simply too dry to place any higher.

Tesco - £1.65

Tesco's potato waffles were slimmer than Asda's yet delivered a far superior taste. The potato waffles weren't dry and had greater flavour. They had a crisp exterior and a tender centre.

Birds Eye - £1.50 for 10 from Asda

The Birds Eye potato waffle distinguished itself amongst most supermarket alternatives. It had a perfectly crispy exterior and a fluffy interior. The potato waffle cooked well and emerged from the oven golden brown. It wasn't dry and delivered the flavour you'd expect from a potato waffle.

Aldi - £1.45

Aldi surpassed Birds Eye as its potato waffle was substantial, flavoursome and light. It boasted a crunchy exterior and tasted remarkably similar to the branded potato waffles. It delivered exactly what you'd desire from a potato waffle. While all the supermarket packets featured 12 waffles, compared to the 10 in the Birds Eye box, Aldi's represented better value for money alongside an even more delicious potato waffle.
