Cerveau, Philadelphia's new colorful pizzeria
Chef Joe Hunter, one of the partners of the now-defunct Pizza Brain, opens Cerveau, a playful pizzeria in Philadelphia's Eastside Beltline.
Cerveau occupies the second floor of the Breaker Breaker restaurant, with walls adorned in vibrant colors and eye-catching patterns reminiscent of a children's party. The atmosphere is similar to that of Breaker Breaker, though with a more informal feel.
The pizzas, with their thin crust and generous toppings, are the specialty. Simpler versions, like the Plain Jane without toppings ($17) or the pepperoni ($19), are outstanding. However, the Rangoon crab pizza ($28) disappoints due to too much cream cheese and a lack of flavor.
The appetizers offer tasty alternatives: grilled broccoli or butternut squash. Main courses are also available, such as half a roast chicken or skirt steak, though the pizza alone is reason enough for a visit. The drinks menu is varied, with beer, wine, cocktails, and non-alcoholic options.
Cerveau is ideal for family meals or gatherings with friends, with long picnic tables that accommodate large groups. The lunch menu is equally appealing, featuring Italian sandwiches, soups, and salads. Open Friday through Sunday.
